Poor Youngest Spawn |

Got his first W-2 form from his job last year and now is fighting his way through the Tax Code. And, at the moment, it looks like he is going to owe Unc'a
Sam money. Youngest Spawn is not a happy camper.

Now would be a good time to start an IRA. If he's going to pay, he might as well pay himself. I think he still has time to donate to an IRA for 2008.

You can donate right up until 4/15 I think...

Did they not deduct as much as they should?
I tinker with our deductions every year and no matter what I do, it seems we always owe the next year. I blame the Minnesotans. |

We took his problem to a dear friend of mine and she gave him some advice so we checked out the Turbo Tax(R) website and used their free version. It took us an
hour of careful crawling through the forms and questions but it appears that he is getting a refund (unless the IRS decides otherwise) after all.
Yes, his ship has come in tax-wise (too bad it's a bath tub toy!).

Things were looking up for Youngest Spawn in these past couple of months. He moved one county west of us so he's only about a half hour away. He has, I
think, two part time jobs. One that comes with a W-2. And one of them was doing renovation on the properties their landlady has in the town he now lives in.
This involves quite a bit of heavy manual labor (so my WolverTwin now has his own "guns"!). Now the landlady is raining drama all over their parade.
It's never a good thing when Youngest Spawn uses words like "micromanage"... in fact, he's never described a boss with this word. She also likes to vomit buzzwords (I think the description "evil walking powerpoint presentation" came into the conversation) as encouragement. At any rate, he's back in his room at the moment taking a nap so he and one of his housemates can go back and rescue their stuff before she changes the locks on them. If he winds up back here, there is going to be some problem with him getting back and forth to work. We have only one vehicle (that runs, anyhow) and that's hubby's. Cross your fingers that this storm blows over with little damage. I really don't want him to lose the W-2 job because of something stupid his landlady did

She can't just change the locks on him without going through the eviction notice.

She may not be able to do that legally, but I'd bet dollars to donuts she'd try.
Any rate, they located the written contract they have with her (and I hope they choke her on it!). It specifies how much rennovation work they are supposed to do for her each month and they have less than six hours worth left to do so it really isn't surprising that she's pulling this now.

They should change the locks before she does.

They should make sure they keep copies of everything. If she changes the locks without going through the proper legal procedure, they should be able to nail
the landlady to the wall including damages for jobs lost because of her behavior, etc.

Sounds like you need the stick sisters of the north to show up on someone's house.

Actually, if I thought it would help and that she could do it, I would contact my "rude Yankee sister of my heart" and sic her on that woman (this is
the dear friend I mentioned in the earlier tax part of this thread). She's a lot better at some of this stuff than I am, and so much more subtle about
tearing you a new one than I am.

Well, Youngest Spawn wound up moving to another house. Same street, but blocks in the other direction a day after I posted the above. Now, he's been let go
from his part time job and he was unable to get the second job he was angling for. I'll be leaving in a little bit to haul him and his stuff home.
Not quite as distressing as it might sound. The Spawnette bounced between freedom and the proverbial pile of pillows I keep "Just In Case" -- with the occassional soft landing over at Grandspawn's Grammy's house -- for quite a while.
